How a new tool made this organization more agile
A real-life example
Choosing new tools for your organization can be a challenge, but the right tool can actually make you more agile.
Here we present an example from a large Danish organization (which wished to remain anonymous) that needed new enterprise software. The organization has a large IT department that serves more than 15,000 end users.
One of their systems was from 2006 and ran as a web application. In fact, there was only one person left with the specialized knowledge - and that person was about to retire. The system was outdated and burdened the organization instead of meeting their needs.
So the organization turned to Innova IT for a new, better solution to their enterprise software needs.
Implementation
The organization's core needs consisted of organizing, managing, and retrieving data. Through dialogue and demonstrations, the organization's needs were specified.
Innova IT suggested that the customer start using the Innova Developer Platform, a platform that Innova IT has developed over the last 20 years and used to create customized solutions and standard software products for their clients.
The Innova Developer Platform is a modular tool with modules that can be implemented and modified by the organization. The developers then generate the application from these standard functions and can change it as needed. It was a learning process to understand a new way of working, but the benefits have exceeded expectations.
Elimination of old software
In the organization, a specific department was still using another old system, based on DOS running on Windows XP. They were close to losing all their data due to outdated technologies. The IT department had estimated that it would take 6 months to migrate the system to newer technology and architecture. With the Innova IT Developer Platform, the IT department could design a system, implement it, and secure data in less than a month!
An agile working method
The Innova Developer Platform has also been praised internally in the organization. Where new software solutions often met with skepticism and doubt, users are now involved in the development process. Users can participate in testing and evaluation and easily come up with ideas - and see them quickly implemented.
"In about 10 minutes we can have a basic application. Then you can do pretty much whatever you want with the data. We work in Visual Studio on top of it to streamline the user interface with the rest of the organization. I build on what they do to adapt it to our needs." says a developer from the organization. This has improved the developers' work, giving them more time and freedom to work on the interesting and important parts of the application.
The return on investment both in terms of time spent, labor, and time to quality is easy to measure, and it has been significant. The customer is now building a department that will exclusively develop enterprise applications based on the Innova Developer Platform.
"We have gotten rid of the tiresome work of just building screens from scratch and basic application logic. This saves us about 80% of the work we used to do." says a developer from the organization. Instead of doing the grunt work, time can be spent trying new ideas, being creative, and delivering more robust and future-proof solutions to the organization.
All in all, it was a successful implementation in a data-heavy organization that has now become more agile.
